From Pool to Ocean with International Scuba
Swim classes as an adult can feel intimidating. That's why we've created a safe and welcoming environment where our certified instructors meet you exactly where you are. No pressure. No judgment. Just patient, professional instruction designed for grown-ups.
Did you know? About 40 million Americans do not know how to swim. That is over 54% of adults in the U.S. either can't swim or lack basic water safety skills (American Red Cross). If that includes you, you're in the majority, not the exception. And it is absolutely not too late.
Location: All adult swim classes are held at our Carrollton location only.
Who These Lessons Are For
Adult swim lessons at International Scuba are designed for all levels, including:
- Adults who never learned to swim. We start from the beginning, at your pace, without judgment.
- Those who want to overcome a fear of the water. Water anxiety is common and addressable, and our instructors know how to work through it with you.
- Swimmers looking to improve their technique. If you can get from one end of the pool to the other but it takes more effort than it should, we can fix that.
- Future scuba divers preparing for certification. PADI Open Water certification requires a 200-meter swim and 10 minutes of treading water. We can get you there.
International Scuba is here to guide you from that first splash to wherever the water takes you.
How We Teach
Adult swim lessons at International Scuba follow the same skill-based, proficiency-driven approach used across all our SSI aquatic programs. That means:
Instruction is built around you, not a generic curriculum. Your instructor will assess your current ability and comfort level in the first session and build from there. Two adults starting at the same point may move through skills at completely different speeds. Both are valid.
Progress is based on performance, not time. You don't advance because you've been in the water for a certain number of weeks. You advance because you can demonstrate a skill consistently and confidently. That's the only benchmark that matters for actual safety.
Safety is the foundation, not an afterthought. Everything we teach is rooted in water safety, not just stroke efficiency. Treading water, floating, recovering to a safe position. These skills matter more than how fast you swim.
What You'll Work On
Water Orientation and Breath Control. Getting comfortable with your face in the water, breathing in a controlled rhythm, and understanding how your body behaves when it's fully supported by water.
Fundamental Safety Skills. Treading water, floating independently, recovering to a standing position, and knowing what to do if you're in water unexpectedly. These are the most practically important skills we teach.
Basic Stroke Development. Freestyle (front crawl) is the primary stroke most adults work toward first, followed by backstroke. The focus is on efficient, relaxed movement, not competitive form.
Endurance and Confidence Building. Swimming continuous distances without stopping, managing breathing, and developing the mental comfort that comes from genuinely knowing you can handle yourself in the water.
Addressing Water Anxiety
It deserves a direct mention because it's real and common.
Water anxiety in adults almost always has a specific origin: a childhood scare, a bad experience, instruction that moved too quickly, or simply never having been taught to feel comfortable in the water. It is a learned response, which means it can be unlearned with the right approach.
Our instructors don't rush past anxiety or treat it as an obstacle. They work with it directly: identifying specific triggers, creating controlled exposure at the right pace, and building real confidence through repeated successful experiences in the water.
If this is your situation: Mention it when you contact us. We'll make sure you're matched appropriately.
From Swimming to Scuba
Many of our adult swim students eventually earn their PADI Open Water Diver certification through International Scuba. It's a natural progression. Once you're confident in the water, a whole new world opens up beneath it.
PADI's Open Water certification requires a 200-meter swim (any stroke, no time limit) and 10 minutes of treading water. If you're interested in scuba diving but not yet at that level, our adult swim program is the right first step.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Adult learners often make faster initial progress than children because they understand instructions more readily and have clearer motivation. The timeline is different from childhood learning, but the result is the same.
More common than you think. Over 54% of American adults can't swim or lack basic water safety skills (American Red Cross). You're in good company, and there's no reason to let embarrassment keep you out of the water any longer.
That depends on your starting point and how often you attend. Most motivated adult beginners who attend consistently reach the point of independent, comfortable swimming within a few months of regular lessons. Private lessons can accelerate this significantly.
Group lessons are 30-minute sessions with other adult students at similar skill levels. Private lessons are 1-on-1 with an instructor and can be scheduled around your availability. Private lessons are a better fit if you have significant water anxiety, need to move at your own pace, or want to progress faster.
No. Adult classes are separate from all children's programming.
If you can't yet swim 200 meters continuously or tread water for 10 minutes, yes. Adult swim lessons are the right starting point. We can specifically prepare you for the PADI swimming requirements.
A well-fitting swimsuit and a towel. Goggles are optional but recommended. Avoid baggy clothing; it creates drag and makes technique feedback harder.
Yes. Adult lessons are open to all ages and ability levels. Instructors adapt instruction to physical limitations. Just let us know when you contact us.
